Should You Use Ethernet For Your Voice & Data Network?

It seems that whenever you talk about an upgrade or new installation of a company’s voice/data network these days you hear the buzz word “ethernet” sometime in the conversation. With all the buzz… should you seriously consider ethernet in the mix for your network solution?

Now think about that for a moment. Are you just “jumping on the bandwagon”… or is there some truth to all this hullabaloo?

To answer that let’s get serious for a moment… no gushing idol worship. Just facts.

First …. it’s very clear that today Ethernet has gone from a nice to have option to the preferred choice for WAN (Wide Area Networks) access links. Many companies also use it in their backbone for IP connectivity. So the question often is “why not Ethernet” ….. rather than “should you use it.”

For example it is increasing commonplace that in a campus network just about all high bandwidth communications is Ethernet based. Also many things that used to be separate such as voice, CCTV, security/card locks can be migrated. Although you might need something to drive the migration. Can someone say cost savings??? Don’t forget scalability with future technologies and increased performance efficiency too. All three will go over very well with your Big Boss …. and your shareholders.

If you need a few bullet points to drive home this message to that audience …. try using these:

- You really don’t need a router. It is simply an Ethernet Handoff to your network.

- As you increase in bandwidth …. the per meg price goes down much quicker than with DS3 or OC3 bandwidth.

- For off-net/on-net sites Ethernet can be much cheaper than standard DS3 or OC3 bandwidth …. because you do not have to deal with loop costs.

However, I don’t think Ethernet is really the common denominator, but IP (which tends to use Ethernet in most places). Since that means you don’t need Ethernet everywhere and you can integrate useful technologies you might need – MPLS, VSAT, ADSL, and DS3 for example.

Be aware though that some parts of networks are likely to not be Ethernet compatible for a long time. The issue with “everything must be xx” is not whether you can get xx (sic Ethernet) in most places, but how to cope with the last few “hold outs”.

A definite pro is that ethernet remains a layer 2 service. Which if you buy from a carrier means that you are in control of the routing. Whereas if you take an IP VPN service this will impact your internal routing configuration. Layer 2, Ethernet based connectivity between sites gives a lot of flexibility and often improved latency/jitter performance.

So if you’re using IP today on SDH services then a migration to Ethernet should be a lot simpler. But again this depends on the scenario. Most carriers now use Ethernet as the last mile and also for backbone connectivity. This has provided higher speeds without the capital outlay …. and has the requisite reliability you should expect.

I also wouldn’t use Spanning Tree and so would rely on the Network Layer to take the path decisions …. as this is a lot more deterministic and saves having multiple different protocols performing on the fly updates. Any IP application including voice and video should run just the same as over SDH …. but Ethernet would give you the options of putting Voice into it’s own VLAN. Controlling bandwidth in this manner …. incorporating Ethernet …. should be so much cheaper. You could over engineer the backbone and keep things simple.

There are no real drawbacks using Ethernet in my mind …. and I personally believe that this would give you more flexibility than either a traditional SDH structure or an IP VPN based network.

The only Cons I can think of relate to the maintenance and troubleshooting of the network. Depending on your architecture and design, it may be a nightmare to maintain the network. For example, point-to-point is simple, but rings and mesh is challenging and will require clever and flawless design.

You really need to design and test the network carefully. You need to be aware of the type of services you will be running. Such as constant traffic, bursty traffic, low-latency traffic etc… as all of that will impact on your network and will require careful configurations. You need to have your QoS (Quality of Service) planned accurately if working with VLAN’s or different types/classes of traffic.

Designed correctly, Ethernet models work well, but poorly implemented ones often have challenges. Its important for you to understand that Ethernet based WAN is not simply “plug-n-play”. It requires additional planning and setup.
Overall I think there are many more pros than cons for choosing ethernet for your voice/data network . We are seeing lots of improvements to Ethernet these days via various industry working groups ….. as well as evolving packet transport technologies such as MPLS-TP and PBB-TE. So the future of etherent looks even brighter.

To get right to the point ….. I would not hesitate to recommend Ethernet as a viable solution. It is a cheap and scalable solution.

The Ups & Downs of Multi-Effects Guitar Pedals

Have you ever seen those guys on stage with a million or so effects pedals laid out at their feet? Patch cables slithering like a bed of snakes through a maze of distortions, delays, choruses, flanges, wah’s, envelope filters, octave dividers, EQ’s, tuners, and the list goes on.

How do they make sense of all those stomp boxes? How long does it take just to plug them in before a gig? Can you really use all of them in the course of a night? Heck, they even make large, football field size, pedal boards so you can attach a cornucopia of pedals with Velcro, and power them all from one source. Do you really need all those sounds?

Okay, I have to confess, there was a time, years ago, that I was a “stomp box” junkie and bought every new fangled pedal that came out. Yes, I had a pedal board. And yes, the rest of the band was set up and ready for sound check before I had all those pedals hooked up and tweaked!

Then came the digital age and everything changed. Legions of engineers designed pedals with a plethora of effects built into a compact package. Suddenly the need to acquire a multitude of various stomp boxes was eliminated.

Even so, many guitarists still prefer the use of analog stomp boxes over their digital counterpart. Talk to ten different guitar players and you’ll get ten different answers as to the merits of one over the other.

Here are some of the ups and downs of multi-effects guitar processors.

Ups

1. Variety – Multi-effects processors have a ton of cool effects built into one unit. The tonal possibilities are almost limitless. In fact, most will have more sounds available than most of us will ever use!

2. Portability – Gone are the days of needing to carry a slew of stomp boxes. Just take one unit out, plug it in, and start playing.

3. Affordability – Although some multi-effects pedals can get pricey, when compared to the cost of purchasing an equal number of stomp boxes to produce the same sounds, they are usually a bargain.

Downs

1. Sound Quality – Many purists would argue that you just can’t get the sound out of a digital pedal that you can a stand alone analog stomp box. The truth is though, that great strides have been made in the quality of digital pedals, and some players say they can’t hear the difference.

2. Complexity – With many multi-effects processors there is a bit of a learning curve – with some it can pretty steep. The flip side is that most will come with factory pre-sets that will get you up and running quickly, and sometimes those are all you’ll ever need.

3. Reliability – Many multi-effects processors will hold up over the long haul, but some can be a little flimsy. Also, if the unit breaks, you are completely shut down. With stomp boxes, if one pedal breaks, just pull it out and keep using the others.

Over the years, I have spent a small fortune on stomp boxes, but now most of them are in a closet. This is not a product endorsement, but when I discovered the Boss ME-50 multi-effects pedal, I thought I died and went to heaven. It’s an extremely user friendly pedal with just the main few effects that you really “need” to pull off a gig. They sound great and are durable for stage use. Perfect for an old “road dog” like me.

Regardless of which direction you go, take the time to consider the differences between analog stomp boxes and digital multi-effects units before making the investment. Visit your local music store and try some out in advance – your tone, and your wallet, will thank you!

Atomic Power in Supercomputing

The entire industry took note when INTEL announced its Atom line of CPU’s. Intel’s ATOM is a new type of processor; it’s tiny, consumes ultra low power. It delivers the full capabilities of an x86 desktop CPU. This implies that it can run windows and will work with a 945G chipset, DDR2 RAM. Atom is more basic than Core 2, being only a single core processor.

The Atom line has been specifically designed for low power applications. But if you are thinking of buying it and fitting it into your desktop motherboard then there’s some sad news for you b’coz these CPU’s cannot fit onto usual desktop motherboard, it’s available to the vendors so as to assemble them with a compatible motherboard, then the CPU is soldered on to motherboard.

I can assure you that doing everyday work like, browsing, listening to music is easy, but when I opened word, excel, access, PowerPoint simultaneously it took 20 minutes for atom to open it, despite its Hyper Threading technology. Certainly, its performance is not going to set the world alight. When I ran a video playback test to test its Home Theater PC capabilities it ran smoothly, but the CPU usage was around 80 percent, so it was clear that it’ll not support full HD.

The specifications for the motherboard are reasonable – the integrated Intel GMA950 video chip can use up to 8MB of the main memory, the RAM and FSB speed is limited to 533 MHz, connectivity is via a 10/100 onboard LAN chip, ans the number of USB ports available is four.

So it’s clear that it’s not a users’ delight in performance. It is all about spending no more energy than required. Also it does not use fans instead relays on two heat sinks for cooling. With a 4W TDP it not only saves electricity bill, but increases backup time when running on a UPS. While the Atom 230 loses out on performance to any entry level desktop package, it certainly is unbeatable on the power consumption charts.

The Internet has become an integral part of our lives today. It aggravates you when you have an Internet connection problem. The first step is to try to restart your computer. After it reboots double click your browser Icon and try again.

When you right click it go to ‘repair’ and select it. If you can not find the icon then you will have to go to the control panel and access network connections. Once you select the correct option Windows will automatically try and repair itself. You will get the message once it is done and you should be able to use internet effectively.

If you are are still unable to connect to the Internet try to reboot your modem that your Service Provider gave you. The problem could be at your internet service provider’s end. Make sure to call him and ask him to reset it at his end if you still can’t connect. He can also check to see if your connection is good. Generally by taking these steps you can repair your internet connection.

Sometimes you get connected but the speed is very slow. To increase the internet connection speed you need to take few steps. (If you don’t understand this call your local service provider or contact a technician).

o You can check your IP address and gateway for internet connection. (normally you will need your Internet provider to help you with this)

o Disable network connection and again enable the connection.

o Restart your computer.

If your computer has viruses then it will affect the internet speed. To keep spyware, adware and Trojan viruses off your computer you need to use effective anti-virus program. Also Remove all history and temporary files from your computer. Go to internet option in Internet Explore and select ‘delete browsing history’ and ‘delete temporary files’. This may vary according to the browser you are using.

If none of these work then it is time to call for professional help and set things right! Most internet providers can help you work through these problems.

SourceSafe (SS) is a part of Microsoft’s VisualStudio. It is installed on a server that you can reach through your office LAN (Local Area Network).

CHECK IN and CHECK OUT are the two important functions that technical writers perform as frequently as necessary. Basically, if as a tech writer you know how to check your files in and out of your project folders, that’s all you need to know about SourceSafe.

Benefits of Setting Up Linux Directories as Mount Points of Partitions

When a directory is a assigned as a mount point to a partition, the files in the directory (and its subdirectories) cannot exceed the size of the partition.

For example, when you install Linux, you can assign the /home directory to a partition with a fixed size. The maximum amount of space that can be taken up by directories and files in this partition can not exceed the size specified.

The benefit of this is that the user or users that have home directories below /home can’t fill the entire disk with program files and data files!

To protect from an attack on your system by a user on: your LAN (Local Area Network), your intranet (internal internet network) or on the internet, some directories are commonly assigned to their own partitions. This restricts the damage that can occur from a “denial of service” attack, where someone automatically creates files in these directories so that they become full. If the directory (partition) becomes full, the entire disk does not become full and the system can still function until these files are deleted.

The home directory (for user data files), the var directory (for variable length files) and other “publicly available” (over a network) directories are commonly assigned to their own partitions to restrict the damage from a denial of service attack.

Data center management isn’t something to joke around about nowadays. After the plethora of disasters we’ve seen in the last few years, being able to safely manage our data has become of the utmost importance.

When a storm or electric failure hits, you need to be able to recall the files necessary to sustain your business. This can take weeks if not properly stored, and then you still might lose a bit of your data.

Lately, more and more companies have looked into better methods of data center management. Some of these methods are as simple as creating a hard copy. Others actually store your information online just in case something happens and you need to get a hold of it.

In a few ways, the online backup idea is a bit better than your standard old hard copy. With a hard copy of your data, it can be broken or misplaced, which isn’t acceptable during an emergency. Despite how large the internet is, it is not capable of losing your data as you would in real life.

Online data center management is also somewhat helpful to the environment, as opposed to hard copies. Should You Use Ethernet For Your Voice & Data Network?

It seems that whenever you talk about an upgrade or new installation of a company’s voice/data network these days you hear the buzz word “ethernet” sometime in the conversation. With all the buzz… should you seriously consider ethernet in the mix for your network solution?

Now think about that for a moment. Are you just “jumping on the bandwagon”… or is there some truth to all this hullabaloo?

To answer that let’s get serious for a moment… no gushing idol worship. Just facts.

First …. it’s very clear that today Ethernet has gone from a nice to have option to the preferred choice for WAN (Wide Area Networks) access links. Many companies also use it in their backbone for IP connectivity. So the question often is “why not Ethernet” ….. rather than “should you use it.”

For example it is increasing commonplace that in a campus network just about all high bandwidth communications is Ethernet based. Also many things that used to be separate such as voice, CCTV, security/card locks can be migrated. Although you might need something to drive the migration. Can someone say cost savings??? Don’t forget scalability with future technologies and increased performance efficiency too. All three will go over very well with your Big Boss …. and your shareholders.

If you need a few bullet points to drive home this message to that audience …. try using these:

- You really don’t need a router. It is simply an Ethernet Handoff to your network.

- As you increase in bandwidth …. the per meg price goes down much quicker than with DS3 or OC3 bandwidth.

- For off-net/on-net sites Ethernet can be much cheaper than standard DS3 or OC3 bandwidth …. because you do not have to deal with loop costs.

However, I don’t think Ethernet is really the common denominator, but IP (which tends to use Ethernet in most places). Since that means you don’t need Ethernet everywhere and you can integrate useful technologies you might need – MPLS, VSAT, ADSL, and DS3 for example.

Be aware though that some parts of networks are likely to not be Ethernet compatible for a long time. The issue with “everything must be xx” is not whether you can get xx (sic Ethernet) in most places, but how to cope with the last few “hold outs”.

A definite pro is that ethernet remains a layer 2 service. Which if you buy from a carrier means that you are in control of the routing. Whereas if you take an IP VPN service this will impact your internal routing configuration. Layer 2, Ethernet based connectivity between sites gives a lot of flexibility and often improved latency/jitter performance.

So if you’re using IP today on SDH services then a migration to Ethernet should be a lot simpler. But again this depends on the scenario. Most carriers now use Ethernet as the last mile and also for backbone connectivity. This has provided higher speeds without the capital outlay …. and has the requisite reliability you should expect.

I also wouldn’t use Spanning Tree and so would rely on the Network Layer to take the path decisions …. as this is a lot more deterministic and saves having multiple different protocols performing on the fly updates. Any IP application including voice and video should run just the same as over SDH …. but Ethernet would give you the options of putting Voice into it’s own VLAN. Controlling bandwidth in this manner …. incorporating Ethernet …. should be so much cheaper. You could over engineer the backbone and keep things simple.

There are no real drawbacks using Ethernet in my mind …. and I personally believe that this would give you more flexibility than either a traditional SDH structure or an IP VPN based network.

The only Cons I can think of relate to the maintenance and troubleshooting of the network. Depending on your architecture and design, it may be a nightmare to maintain the network. For example, point-to-point is simple, but rings and mesh is challenging and will require clever and flawless design.

You really need to design and test the network carefully. You need to be aware of the type of services you will be running. Such as constant traffic, bursty traffic, low-latency traffic etc… as all of that will impact on your network and will require careful configurations. You need to have your QoS (Quality of Service) planned accurately if working with VLAN’s or different types/classes of traffic.

Designed correctly, Ethernet models work well, but poorly implemented ones often have challenges. Its important for you to understand that Ethernet based WAN is not simply “plug-n-play”. It requires additional planning and setup.
Overall I think there are many more pros than cons for choosing ethernet for your voice/data network . We are seeing lots of improvements to Ethernet these days via various industry working groups ….. as well as evolving packet transport technologies such as MPLS-TP and PBB-TE. So the future of etherent looks even brighter.

To get right to the point ….. I would not hesitate to recommend Ethernet as a viable solution. It is a cheap and scalable solution.

The Ups & Downs of Multi-Effects Guitar Pedals

Have you ever seen those guys on stage with a million or so effects pedals laid out at their feet? Patch cables slithering like a bed of snakes through a maze of distortions, delays, choruses, flanges, wah’s, envelope filters, octave dividers, EQ’s, tuners, and the list goes on.

How do they make sense of all those stomp boxes? How long does it take just to plug them in before a gig? Can you really use all of them in the course of a night? Heck, they even make large, football field size, pedal boards so you can attach a cornucopia of pedals with Velcro, and power them all from one source. Do you really need all those sounds?

Okay, I have to confess, there was a time, years ago, that I was a “stomp box” junkie and bought every new fangled pedal that came out. Yes, I had a pedal board. And yes, the rest of the band was set up and ready for sound check before I had all those pedals hooked up and tweaked!

Then came the digital age and everything changed. Legions of engineers designed pedals with a plethora of effects built into a compact package. Suddenly the need to acquire a multitude of various stomp boxes was eliminated.

Even so, many guitarists still prefer the use of analog stomp boxes over their digital counterpart. Talk to ten different guitar players and you’ll get ten different answers as to the merits of one over the other.

Here are some of the ups and downs of multi-effects guitar processors.

Ups

1. Variety – Multi-effects processors have a ton of cool effects built into one unit. The tonal possibilities are almost limitless. In fact, most will have more sounds available than most of us will ever use!

2. Portability – Gone are the days of needing to carry a slew of stomp boxes. Just take one unit out, plug it in, and start playing.

3. Affordability – Although some multi-effects pedals can get pricey, when compared to the cost of purchasing an equal number of stomp boxes to produce the same sounds, they are usually a bargain.

Downs

1. Sound Quality – Many purists would argue that you just can’t get the sound out of a digital pedal that you can a stand alone analog stomp box. The truth is though, that great strides have been made in the quality of digital pedals, and some players say they can’t hear the difference.

2. Complexity – With many multi-effects processors there is a bit of a learning curve – with some it can pretty steep. The flip side is that most will come with factory pre-sets that will get you up and running quickly, and sometimes those are all you’ll ever need.

3. Reliability – Many multi-effects processors will hold up over the long haul, but some can be a little flimsy. Also, if the unit breaks, you are completely shut down. With stomp boxes, if one pedal breaks, just pull it out and keep using the others.

Over the years, I have spent a small fortune on stomp boxes, but now most of them are in a closet. This is not a product endorsement, but when I discovered the Boss ME-50 multi-effects pedal, I thought I died and went to heaven. It’s an extremely user friendly pedal with just the main few effects that you really “need” to pull off a gig. They sound great and are durable for stage use. Perfect for an old “road dog” like me.

Regardless of which direction you go, take the time to consider the differences between analog stomp boxes and digital multi-effects units before making the investment. Visit your local music store and try some out in advance – your tone, and your wallet, will thank you!
