			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With the green movement getting more and more attention every day, data centers are starting to get more and more flack for the amount of power the use up and companies are looking for ways to start &#8220;greening up.&#8221; &nbsp; Most of the initiatives that data facilities are taking involve recycling the power within the facility, using energy-efficient servers and cooling the server room more effectively. &nbsp;These efforts are great and lead to less wasted energy and a more efficient system. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p>But with all the attention focused on saving, little is being paid to making better use of the existing heat generated by the servers. &nbsp;As it stands, this heat gets wasted. &nbsp;It&#8217;s removed from the facility by whatever cooling system the data center uses. &nbsp;Most commonly this is in the form of air conditioning or water cooling.</p>
<p><strong>Missed Opportunity</strong> &nbsp;</p>
<p>But what if there was another way &#8211; what if the heat generated by the servers could be put to better use? &nbsp;There is. &nbsp;The solution lies in using the heat generated by the servers and putting toward something useful, rather than simply discarding it in the atmosphere. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Energy is wasted all the time these days. &nbsp;Companies spend thousands of dollars to remove the heat from their server room, while simultaneously spending more money to heat other parts of the building. &nbsp;This wasted heat is a missed opportunity in energy efficiency. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p>There are a few companies that have seen this opportunity and have taken the initiative to put the heat generated by servers to good use. &nbsp;There is no limit to the potential that this has when harnessed and used productively. &nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Heat Recirculation</strong> &nbsp;</p>
<p>One example of a company using the existing heat from the servers is Quebecor, a Canadian media company. &nbsp;Located in Winnipeg, where temperatures frequently reach 35 degrees below zero, Celsius in the winter. &nbsp;The company found that even during the coldest months of the year, they were spending thousands of dollars cooling their data center, despite the harshly cold temperatures outside. &nbsp;At the same time, they were spending just as much money heating up other parts of the building. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p>It just didn&#8217;t make sense. &nbsp;Fortunately the regional director for the company saw this as an opportunity for the company to reuse the heat generated by the servers which helps save energy all around and at the same time reduces costs. &nbsp;So that&#8217;s exactly what he did. &nbsp;Instead of merely cooling the server room, he implemented a system whereby the excess heat was harnessed and pumped into other parts of the building to provide heat. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p>The heat generated from the servers is used to heat the offices upstairs which host the Winnipeg Sun. &nbsp;Additional heat is allocated to the warehouse across the street which is often chilly due to the door opening and closing all day. &nbsp;Whatever heat is left over is put back outside. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Heating a Swimming Pool</strong> &nbsp;</p>
<p>Another company in Switzerland had a similar idea of putting heat generated by servers to good use. &nbsp;This company is located about 25-feet underground and 500 feet away from a swimming pool. &nbsp;Instead of wasting the heat generated by the servers, the company decided pump the heat into the nearby swimming pool in order to provide it with the necessary heat. &nbsp; &nbsp;Using custom-made cooling units overhead and powered by 200 servers, they are able to use the hot exhaust air to heat up the water and then filter it into the pool. &nbsp;This creates a practical use for the excess heat while simultaneously eliminating the need for the pool to use oil as its energy source.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Going Green(house)</strong> &nbsp;</p>
<p>The latest example of a data center putting their excess heat to good use is at the University of Notre Dame. &nbsp;Raising energy costs are forcing the local greenhouse to shut down. &nbsp;Currently it costs around $1,000 a day to heat the greenhouse, which politicians have decided is too much to ask taxpayers to pay. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s where Notre Dame comes in. &nbsp;They&#8217;ve developed a new type of data center that&#8217;s housed in a standard shipping container and placed right next to the greenhouse. &nbsp;The excess heat from the data center will be pumped into the greenhouse to heat it. &nbsp;This will reduce the costs of running the greenhouse enough so that it won&#8217;t have to shut down. &nbsp;</p>
<p>As an added bonus, the data center will be able to use the humidity generated by the greenhouse in the fall, winter and spring. &nbsp;This reciprocal relationship benefits not only the greenhouse, but the servers as well. &nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Future of Heat</strong> &nbsp;</p>
<p>Reusing heat from data centers has many applications and lots of potential as an energy-saving initiative. &nbsp;Most companies aren&#8217;t thinking along these lines though. &nbsp;But they should. &nbsp; &nbsp;Creating more efficient servers and cooling systems, reducing the amount of heat generated, and reusing the heat that is generated are all integral components of an energy-efficient data center. &nbsp;Companies have many options to choose from and reusing excess heat is yet another way they can help reduce the amount of waste produced in their facility. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It seems that whenever you talk about an upgrade or new installation of a company&#8217;s voice/data network these days you hear the buzz word &#8220;ethernet&#8221; sometime in the conversation. With all the buzz&#8230; should you seriously consider ethernet in the mix for your network solution?</p>
<p>Now think about that for a moment. Are you just &#8220;jumping on the bandwagon&#8221;&#8230; or is there some truth to all this hullabaloo?</p>
<p>To answer that let&#8217;s get serious for a moment&#8230; no gushing idol worship. Just facts.</p>
<p>First &#8230;. it&#8217;s very clear that today Ethernet has gone from a nice to have option to the preferred choice for WAN (Wide Area Networks) access links. Many companies also use it in their backbone for IP connectivity. So the question often is &#8220;why not Ethernet&#8221; &#8230;.. rather than &#8220;should you use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>For example it is increasing commonplace that in a campus network just about all high bandwidth communications is Ethernet based. Also many things that used to be separate such as voice, CCTV, security/card locks can be migrated. Although you might need something to drive the migration.  Can someone say cost savings??? Don&#8217;t forget scalability with future technologies and increased performance efficiency too. All three will go over very well with your Big Boss &#8230;. and your shareholders.</p>
<p>If you need a few bullet points to drive home this message to that audience &#8230;. try using these:</p>
<p>- You really don&#8217;t need a router. It is simply an Ethernet Handoff to your network.</p>
<p>- As you increase in bandwidth &#8230;. the per meg price goes down much quicker than with DS3 or OC3 bandwidth.</p>
<p>- For off-net/on-net sites Ethernet can be much cheaper than standard DS3 or OC3 bandwidth &#8230;. because you do not have to deal with loop costs.</p>
<p>However, I don&#8217;t think Ethernet is really the common denominator, but IP (which tends to use Ethernet in most places). Since that means you don&#8217;t need Ethernet everywhere and you can integrate useful technologies you might need &#8211; MPLS, VSAT, ADSL, and DS3 for example.</p>
<p>Be aware though that some parts of networks are likely to not be Ethernet compatible for a long time. The issue with &#8220;everything must be xx&#8221; is not whether you can get xx (sic Ethernet) in most places, but how to cope with the last few &#8220;hold outs&#8221;.</p>
<p>A definite pro is that ethernet remains a layer 2 service. Which if you buy from a carrier means that you are in control of the routing. Whereas if you take an IP VPN service this will impact your internal routing configuration. Layer 2, Ethernet based connectivity between sites gives a lot of flexibility and often improved latency/jitter performance.</p>
<p>So if you&#8217;re using IP today on SDH services then a migration to Ethernet should be a lot simpler. But again this depends on the scenario. Most carriers now use Ethernet as the last mile and also for backbone connectivity. This has provided higher speeds without the capital outlay &#8230;. and has the requisite reliability you should expect.</p>
<p>I also wouldn&#8217;t use Spanning Tree and so would rely on the Network Layer to take the path decisions &#8230;. as this is a lot more deterministic and saves having multiple different protocols performing on the fly updates. Any IP application including voice and video should run just the same as over SDH &#8230;. but Ethernet would give you the options of putting Voice into it&#8217;s own VLAN. Controlling bandwidth in this manner &#8230;. incorporating Ethernet &#8230;. should be so much cheaper. You could over engineer the backbone and keep things simple.</p>
<p>There are no real drawbacks using Ethernet in my mind &#8230;. and I personally believe that this would give you more flexibility than either a traditional SDH structure or an IP VPN based network.</p>
<p>The only Cons I can think of relate to the maintenance and troubleshooting of the network.  Depending on your architecture and design, it may be a nightmare to maintain the network. For example, point-to-point is simple, but rings and mesh is challenging and will require clever and flawless design.</p>
<p>You really need to design and test the network carefully. You need to be aware of the type of services you will be running. Such as constant traffic, bursty traffic, low-latency traffic etc&#8230; as all of that will impact on your network and will require careful configurations. You need to have your QoS (Quality of Service) planned accurately if working with VLAN&#8217;s or different types/classes of traffic.</p>
<p>Designed correctly, Ethernet models work well, but poorly implemented ones often have challenges. Its important for you to understand that Ethernet based WAN is not simply &#8220;plug-n-play&#8221;. It requires additional planning and setup.  <br />Overall I think there are many more pros than cons for choosing ethernet for your voice/data network . We are seeing lots of improvements to Ethernet these days via various industry working groups &#8230;.. as well as evolving packet transport technologies such as MPLS-TP and PBB-TE.  So the future of etherent looks even brighter.</p>
<p>To get right to the point &#8230;.. I would not hesitate to recommend Ethernet as a viable solution. It is a cheap and scalable solution.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you ever seen those guys on stage with a million or so effects pedals laid out at their feet? Patch cables slithering like a bed of snakes through a maze of distortions, delays, choruses, flanges, wah&#8217;s, envelope filters, octave dividers, EQ&#8217;s, tuners, and the list goes on.</p>
<p>How do they make sense of all those stomp boxes? How long does it take just to plug them in before a gig? Can you really use all of them in the course of a night? Heck, they even make large, football field size, pedal boards so you can attach a cornucopia of pedals with Velcro, and power them all from one source. Do you really need all those sounds?</p>
<p>Okay, I have to confess, there was a time, years ago, that I was a &#8220;stomp box&#8221; junkie and bought every new fangled pedal that came out. Yes, I had a pedal board. And yes, the rest of the band was set up and ready for sound check before I had all those pedals hooked up and tweaked!</p>
<p>Then came the digital age and everything changed. Legions of engineers designed pedals with a plethora of effects built into a compact package. Suddenly the need to acquire a multitude of various stomp boxes was eliminated.</p>
<p>Even so, many guitarists still prefer the use of analog stomp boxes over their digital counterpart. Talk to ten different guitar players and you&#8217;ll get ten different answers as to the merits of one over the other.</p>
<p>Here are some of the ups and downs of multi-effects guitar processors.</p>
<p>Ups</p>
<p>1. Variety &#8211; Multi-effects processors have a ton of cool effects built into one unit. The tonal possibilities are almost limitless. In fact, most will have more sounds available than most of us will ever use!</p>
<p>2. Portability &#8211; Gone are the days of needing to carry a slew of stomp boxes. Just take one unit out, plug it in, and start playing.</p>
<p>3. Affordability &#8211; Although some multi-effects pedals can get pricey, when compared to the cost of purchasing an equal number of stomp boxes to produce the same sounds, they are usually a bargain.</p>
<p>Downs</p>
<p>1. Sound Quality &#8211; Many purists would argue that you just can&#8217;t get the sound out of a digital pedal that you can a stand alone analog stomp box. The truth is though, that great strides have been made in the quality of digital pedals, and some players say they can&#8217;t hear the difference.</p>
<p>2. Complexity &#8211; With many multi-effects processors there is a bit of a learning curve &#8211; with some it can pretty steep. The flip side is that most will come with factory pre-sets that will get you up and running quickly, and sometimes those are all you&#8217;ll ever need.</p>
<p>3. Reliability &#8211; Many multi-effects processors will hold up over the long haul, but some can be a little flimsy. Also, if the unit breaks, you are completely shut down. With stomp boxes, if one pedal breaks, just pull it out and keep using the others.</p>
<p>Over the years, I have spent a small fortune on stomp boxes, but now most of them are in a closet. This is not a product endorsement, but when I discovered the Boss ME-50 multi-effects pedal, I thought I died and went to heaven. It&#8217;s an extremely user friendly pedal with just the main few effects that you really &#8220;need&#8221; to pull off a gig. They sound great and are durable for stage use. Perfect for an old &#8220;road dog&#8221; like me.</p>
<p>Regardless of which direction you go, take the time to consider the differences between analog stomp boxes and digital multi-effects units before making the investment. Visit your local music store and try some out in advance &#8211; your tone, and your wallet, will thank you!</p>

A SAN is usually found in enterprise environments where it connects islands of data storage with the help of a high-speed network. SANs allow applications to store their data on virtual hard drives; the applications treat them as local file systems that are not shared between them. This does not allow for cache synchronization, helps in data security and prevents corruption of files. Although data can be viewed concurrently, editing and rewriting is prevented and therefore unintentional corruption that would otherwise be unavoidable is prevented. This is a big advantage of a SAN over conventional file-sharing systems.</p>
<p>SANs help to increase and better utilize storage capacity as they connect multiple servers to several storage units. SANs are used to make available frequently used data that is connected to hard drives such as email servers, user information, and file servers that manage frequently used transactional data.</p>
<p>Since SANs do not carry any application traffic, they are a network between servers and storage devices; they do not create bottlenecks in the LAN. This allows free and fast passage to all data, especially mission-critical data. Since SANs are able to provide storage-to-storage connectivity as well, they are ideal for use with new clustering technologies where computers are deployed in clusters to improve performance. It also enables them to be used with NAS devices so that disk and tape capabilities can be extended to multiple servers.</p>
<p>SANs are developed using fiber channels that enable speeds of up to 200 Mbps. Fiber channel supports multiple servers and can connect them to various devices. A fiber channel San network is made up of fiber channel switches. Fiber channel routing offers major scalability benefits as it enables the transfer of data between various fiber channel fabrics without merging the fabrics. A fiber optic bus can provide connectivity up to 10 kilometers before one has to make use of an extender. Network and channel protocols supported by SAN include SCSI, HIPPI, IP, ATM, etc.</p>
<p>SANs allow remote booting of the servers which leads to quick and easy replacement of servers not working properly. Disaster recovery is made easy through SANs as storage replication can be implemented by disk array controllers and server software both. SAN over IP WAN allows for business continuity in the event of a disaster. One of the early issues with SANs utilizing fiber channel technology was the lack of interoperability between switches and hardware manufactured by different vendors. This, however, has been rectified to a great deal because now standards are in place.</p>

<p>To call international, I use to spend lot of money for the phone cards. I also use to cut my talking time to limit my spending. You can ship Magic Jack to your country. It&#8217;s a very small device. You have to connect this device to computer using USB port. Device can be connected to cordless phone to avoid headset. When ever you want to talk you can turn the computer on. You can just dial the local number assigned to your device or your relatives can dial your number like domestic call.</p>

Additionally, the contract terms offered by some broadband providers are in themselves equally confusing, and making sense of what&#8217;s going on can be a tricky process.  So what should you look for in selecting a broadband package, and what does it all mean?</p>
<p>Well, luckily for you you don&#8217;t really have to understand what they all mean.  But you do have to have a rudimentary knowledge of what you can expect.  The most common base line is maximum speed, which will be expressed as KBPS, or kilobytes per second.  Alternatively, it&#8217;s just cited as being &#8217;2 meg&#8217; or &#8217;8 meg&#8217;, as in &#8216;megabytes per second&#8217;.  Whilst the speed you choose will depend on what you use your broadband for, it will also turn on the quality of your broadband access and some local areas are physically incapable of receiving some faster speeds as a result of their current infrastructures.  That said, bear in mind when you&#8217;re buying an expensive package to investigate whether or not you can actually receive the full benefits of your contract.</p>
<p>Another common thing that is a feature of broadband packages is router inclusion.  Many providers run special promotions that give away routers in order to encourage sign up.  What many customers don&#8217;t realize is that routers are essential components of the broadband setup if you intend to use more than one computer on that package, and thus it may actually prove to be a good value proposition if you can get a router thrown in for no extra cost.</p>
<p>Where this is an issue, just be sure that you understand the terms of the contract you&#8217;re getting into.  Some providers have contracts on a rolling monthly basis which can be good for students or for those that move a great deal for business reasons.  However the vast majority look to tie down customers for twelve or even eighteen months at a time, with heavy &#8216;get-out&#8217; penalties which can be quite restrictive.  What that means is that you have to take care to ensure you end up choosing the right provider to begin with to avoid encountering any problems with long contract terms.</p>
<p>Broadband packages can present the opportunity for good value for money.  Whether you are a consumer or a business, it&#8217;s a crucial service in modern life and understanding what it is you require is half the battle in getting on your way to a bargain.  By understanding both the technical aspects of the package as well as the terms and conditions of the contract to which you are agreeing, you can be fully prepared for any nasty surprises that happen to arise later down the line.</p>

On the street, where I live there are 7 homes in foreclosure right now.   It is pretty scary for a lot of folks out there.   Whether it is because of a family emergency, loss of job or subprime loan percentage rate readjustment that is making your house no longer affordable, it just does not matter.  All that matters is that you may no longer have a house to live in.</p>
<p>Let me tell you a true story.   My husband and I had our house foreclosed on a few years back.   We were really scared because we thought that no one would rent to us!  Our credit scores were horrible and we had not rented in over 10 years.   We finally found someone to rent to us off of Craigslist.   We moved in right away.    About four months went by and I woke up to a notice on the door.  Our landlord was getting the house we were living in foreclosed on.  Needless to say, we had to move again.</p>
<p>Today we are going to talk about how to avoid foreclosure on your home.  Most of this is common sense, but it cannot be stressed enough.</p>
<p>So the first you need to do is be honest with yourself and what your capabilities are. I don&#8217;t claim to have any miracle answers for your situation, but i will talk about the first things you can do to try avoid foreclosure.   There are three things that you need to do first.</p>
<p>1.	You need to evaluate your living expenses, income and bills.</p>
<p>2.	You need to contact your mortgage holder.</p>
<p>3.	You need to contact an attorney that is familiar with foreclosure proceedings in your state.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s start with evaluating your living expenses.   The first thing you need to do is cut out everything that you do not need.    Here are a few items that you need to consider:</p>
<p>o	Eating out, Buying at expensive grocery stores</p>
<p>o	Cable TV, Cell Phones &#8211; switch to LAN line</p>
<p>o	Entertainment</p>
<p>o	Buying Clothes, DVDs, CDs, extras</p>
<p>o	Vacations</p>
<p>o	Gym memberships, Tanning memberships, etc</p>
<p>o	Stop using AC, Keep heater off, wash dishes by hand</p>
<p>Determine if there is a way that you can make extra money.   You could have a garage sale, sell your 2nd car, take a 2nd job, and put your house up for sale if need be.</p>
<p>Now, you need to consider what bills you can actually afford to pay.  The first thing to do is to quit paying your credit cards.  You need to pay your basic living expenses; gas, electric, phone, food, insurance.  Now, you need to pay your mortgage or what you can of it.    Everything else should go on the back burner.</p>
<p>It is important that you contact your mortgage holder.    They will probably tell you that there is nothing you can do until you miss a payment or two.  That is okay.  If they tell you this, then you need to make a decision.</p>
<p>You have to decide whether or not you want to stop paying your mortgage or if you want to keep paying it.  Here is the key- in just the past few months, mortgage holders are actually working with customers now.     They will usually give you three options.    The three choices are lowering your interest, adding the behind payments to the end of your note, or renegotiating your loan.</p>
<p>Once you have done that, you should contact an attorney familiar with foreclosure proceedings in your state.  It is very important to know what to expect if you decide to let your house go or you simply end up in foreclosure.   Many people make the mistake of reading about foreclosure but not realizing that each state has different laws.   For example in some states if you do a short sale instead of a foreclosure, you can be responsible to pay back the difference of what you owe to the lender.   This could be thousands of dollars.</p>
<p>It is important to ask the attorney these kinds of questions:</p>
<p>o	Detailed timelines &amp; what to expect</p>
<p>o	Do you have to pay back the difference in $$ if it is sold for less than what you owe.</p>
<p>o	Do you have to pay income tax on the difference both federal &amp; state?</p>
<p>o	If you are considering bankruptcy should you file before or after you go into foreclosure.</p>
<p>You need to find a good resource that will help you with all of these things.   One that will give you a free debt analysis, gives you access to the best attorneys around at dirt bottom prices; one that will help you with debt negotiation, and help you raise your credit scores.</p>

This is a crossroads of factors: multiple Internet backbones with intelligent routing, redundant power systems, adequate cooling. Behind the frontline systems is a commitment to maintain systems; without that support, uptime is still a matter of luck. That consistent maintenance is one area that low-cost colocation facilities risk outages and poor performance, since maintaining facilities can cost millions of dollars. There are several major places to check for the infrastructure of a good data center:</p>
<p>o	Infrastructure monitoring</p>
<p>o	Security and support personnel</p>
<p>o	Long-term and scheduled facility system maintenance</p>
<p>o	Disaster-resistant facility construction</p>
<p>Round-the-Clock Server Monitoring</p>
<p>Server monitoring focuses on another safety level of uptime, and to be truly effective, it has to be 24/7/365. A low-cost colocation facility probably won&#8217;t have the capacity to monitor any of your systems, leaving your servers vulnerable to a variety of performance and power issues. However, a quality colocation facility will offer circuit-level power, server, network or application monitoring programs. A high-level of service allows power fluctuations, overuse, or performance degradation to be quickly detected. Without monitoring, customers cannot be notified when an issue occurs.</p>
<p>There are other server-maintenance areas where low-quality data centers cut corners. They may not offer services like daily or weekly tape backups, secure storage, crash carts, KVMs, or complimentary wireless networks. The ability to monitor and maintain servers effectively is critical to network performance.</p>
<p>Personnel Resources (Security and Support)</p>
<p>The actual people and procedures in place at the colocation center have a big impact on customers. Many low-cost colocation facilities attempt to operate remotely, but having expert services on-site increases uptime and lowers the time customers spend in outages and maintenance.</p>
<p>Like monitoring, support services must be available 24-hours a day. Quality data centers have a 24-hour support number that reaches on-site support, on-site facilities, support, engineering, and management personnel. Since on-site personnel is an investment, many low-cost colocation facilities attempt to farm out customer service to phone banks, at the risk of leaving their customers with low-skilled and ineffective support.</p>
<p>On-site security also matters.  Many businesses, from gaming to healthcare, deal with sensitive customer data, and keeping data secure is critical. Like support, security requires active, on-site personnel, plus integrated data center procedures. Low cost data centers may lack:</p>
<p>o	Passcard-based secure access</p>
<p>o	Equipment barcodes and check in/out procedures</p>
<p>o	Meet-me rooms separate from the colocation server rooms</p>
<p>o	Multiple layer video surveillance with footage archiving for least 30 days</p>
<p>Long-Term Systems Maintenance</p>
<p>The power and cooling systems in a colocation facility with full-capacity and redundant backup units are designed so that if a primary system has an outage, the facility doesn&#8217;t go down. However, major backup systems &#8211; UPS and generators for power and CRAC and chillers for cooling &#8211; must have regular testing, routine maintenance, and adequate supplies, like fuel for the generators. All testing and maintenance will have records; make sure that the colocation facility makes the records available and that the schedules are reasonable and consistent.</p>
<p>Also make sure that the colocation facility has continual systems monitoring service running. Systems monitoring checks facility power usage, server room temperatures, fire response, and climate control systems like CRAC units and chillers; monitoring services can identify and notify the facility if a system is underperforming so they can respond instantly.</p>
<p>Targeted Fire Suppression</p>
<p>Another measure of quality is whether the facility is designed to control catastrophic events in ways that preserve network equipment. For example, server and computer equipment require specialized fire suppression systems which detect minute smoke particles (VESDA systems) and respond with targeted, gas-based suppression to minimize equipment damage.</p>

<p>A well-designed, well-maintained facility can be difficult to find. There are low-cost data centers out there which may talk about technology or service, but do not offer the services, monitoring, and support that are required for high uptime. The only way to identify a good data center is to be proactive:</p>

<p>o	Ask the salesperson about equipment and facility systems maintenance.</p>
