No Matter What it is Still a Data Centre

What would you call it? Could it be a computer center, hosting facility, server farm, internet hotel, internet service provider (ISP), full service provider (FSP), wireless application service provider (WASP), or a telecommunication hotel? No matter what you or your friends call it, it is still a data centre. It is known as a place that has different equipment such as computers, servers, data storage devices, routers and other related equipment. The centers will store, manage, process and exchange data and information. The physical centers will have cooling devices, back up equipment. and special security measures within the centers.

The purpose of a data centre is to be able to provide the business a reliable information system to run their operations. They can also be used as back up off site. Both are the most common uses of the centers. If the system breaks down or does not perform constantly, the company operations will have too many snags or have to stop their operations all together. It is very important to supply a reliable framework for the information technology operations. Along with supplying the reliable infrastructure, it is important to have the most modern and up to date security possible. There is always a concern with the information stored and the worry about if the security is good enough. A good center will have the highest standards of security.

The classifications requirements, of data centers, are defined by the Uptime Institute. They have copyrighted the 4 levels of classifications. Description of availability of data from the hardware at a location determines each level. Tier 1 being the most basic level and tier 4 has the greatest accessibility. A data centre can be in one room of a building, more than one floor or the whole building. Air conditioning is used to control the humidity and temperature of the center. It is becoming more popular to try and use economizer cooling, which is using the outside air to keep it all cool. Backup power is very important and may include a diesel generator.

It is very common to have raised flooring made of removable square tiles in a data centre. This helps with the even air distribution and circulation. Some centers are also starting to run their cables underneath the tiles for better security. Fire protection is also very important in the centers. Smoke detectors are usually installed as a preventative measure as well as fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems being utilized for on the spot control.
