By using proxy anonymity a lot of people are keeping their surfing just a little more private on the internet. They are very simple to use, input the IP address of the anonymous proxy into your browser usually found under the Tools area e.g in IE7 you’ll find it under Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings and select use a proxy server.
Once this proxy server is inputted, you’ll just need to restart your browser and then all your web browsing will be directed through this proxy server. In fact you’ll probably have already used a proxy server at work or college, where most browsing is conducted via a proxy server.
So what do you need to know about Proxy anonymity?
Well it’s not a total solution, your IP address and web browsing is still recorded on the ISP logs and indeed several other places. What it does do is to block the web site you are visiting from recording your true IP address, it will only record the IP address of the proxy server. This does give you some level of anonymity but it does come with some risks if you try to use a free anonymous proxy.
So what are the problems with Proxy Anonymity?
The main problem is because people don’t realise that an anonymous proxy costs lots to run, and that the majority of free anonymous proxies are mistakes (administrators have set them up incorrectly), or worse are hacked servers which have been opened up for use. This is the paradox of using proxies if you pick one which is controlled by a bunch of hackers you are much more insecure using a proxy than someone who uses nothing. This is because all your data may be being logged and stolen, which is simple if you control a proxy server as the majority of web browsing is done in clear text.
