How to Attach a Wireless Router

Wireless routers are like a modem but it uses wireless access points instead. You will be enjoying more surfing and internet browsing if you have this type of router. It distributes internet connection all over the house which is a good thing if you have multiple computers at home.

If you do not trust your capabilities to install this by yourself, you might need this simple guide in installing:

Step 1: Before anything else, you have to choose a decent router first. Compare brands and choose the ones that have the features you will really need. You do not necessarily have to purchase the fastest ones as most of them only transmit speed much less than that. Just be vigilant in your choices. Also make sure that it is compatible with your internet connection.

Step 2: Put the router next to your internet cable. It should be somewhere a bit high so the antennae can better transmit signal. There are two ways of hooking it up to your internet. For those using DSL connection with modems, you need to connect the modem to the router using an Ethernet cable. Connect it to the WAN port. For WiFi connections, just put the wireless adapter to the WAN port.

Step 3: If you have desktop computers and it is not wireless ready, just get a LAN cable and connect one end at the back of your computer and the other end at one of the LAN ports found at the back of the router. These ports are usually in color yellow. Your other wireless devices such as a laptop computer, it will automatically detect the wireless signal already.

Step 4: The next thing you need to do is to install router in your computer. Use your main computer. Put the disc in the CD-ROM and follow the installation procedures. After that, open your browser and log on to the IP address of your router. Most routers have the same default IP address but you can find this information on the documentation provided by the router.

Step 5: Change the password especially the SSID to make it more secure. While most wireless routers have WPA encryption settings, it is still better to make it twice as secure so no other intruders can use your local area connection.

Now that you know how to attach a wireless router, you are now ready to make your own local area connection.
