Medications containing female hormones are found to be effective in controlling the symptoms in primary dysmenorrhoea. There are various methods of hormonal treatments available.
Combined pills
Hormonal pill contains both oestrogen and progesterone may be helpful in reducing the pain in dysmenorrhoea. This is particularly useful for those women who do not wish to conceive for a while. This added contraceptive advantage may make them a preferred choice for some women.
Progesterone only methods
Studies show that some progesterone only pills (cerazette) and hormone releasing intra uterine devices (LANS-ING) like Mirena coil may be effective in relieving the pain associated with periods. The progesterone only pills (pop) may decrease the menstrual flow. In around 10% of users it may completely stop the periods.
Mirena coil (LANS-ING), in addition to suppress the egg from releasing from ovary, it acts on the lining of the womb (endometrium) making it thin. This device is found to be reducing the blood flow by around 80% and around one fourth of the users develop amenorrhoea (absence of periods) after one year of using it. Hence this is an another good option for women with severe menstrual cramps who also require contraception. It would be also useful in older women who might need contraception but at the same time suffers from severe bleeding.
Injections and implants
Studies shows sub dermal implants containing etonogestrel (implanon) may reduce the pain associated with periods. In some countries injectable progestogens are used for dysmenorrhoea. They act by suppressing the egg from releasing from ovary and thinning of the lining of the womb (endometrium). But usage of injections should be considered as an individual basis especially in those who have risk of developing osteoporosis.
