How Does a PBX Business Phone System Work?

Of course, for businesses that are rapidly growing, the costs of international calls can definitely burn a hole in the pocket, but with PBX business phone systems today, that too does not seem to be a problem. PBX phones also ensure that you only cut down on business calls and not on your business opportunities.

So what is PBX?

PBX is an abbreviation that is used to describe Private Branch Exchange. This is basically a private telephone switch which is installed at your business location in order to aid the communication between the employees in the various departments inside the organisation. Also, these systems allow you to be connected to your international branches with ease as well while still accessing enough external telephone lines.

So how does this work?

Incoming Calls

The traditional PBX system ensures that the calls get transferred from a public switch telephone network to a private switched network. This means that all the incoming calls on the incoming lines are routed to a private switching system. This then switches the call to a telephone to a call on a private number within the private system.

Outgoing Calls

If the employees within the company want to make an internal call on the PBX network, then they have to type in 0 and begin, or 1 to access an outside line. Once the private line is disconnected, then he/she can make a regular call.

Internal Calls

The calls that are made on a traditional PBX system are very similar to the calls that are made between the private lines on a traditional public switched network. The difference here, though, is that the calls on the PBX phone system are run on a private internal line and switches.

What is Traditional PBX Technology?

Automated replacement for the old time operators with the plug and switchboard are traditional PBX phone systems. A PBX phone system is one that switches the calls between the circuits. Instead of manually connecting a call through a patch cable, the PBX uses a miniature switch in order to route the analogue signal. The traditional PBX system started out with analogue technology and they were more limited in the number of telephone lines that they could initially support. After some time, the analogue PBX switched were replaced with digital switches in order to support higher traffic on both the internal telephone lines as well the connections to the external line and the trunk calls as well.

What Is IP-PBX?

There has been a surge of development in the communications technology and the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network has been developed. It is a completely digital PBX phone system, which uses digital technology and Internet Protocol (IP) in order to route the phone conversations to a proper telephone handset. The IP-PBS systems are less expensive than the traditional PBX phone systems and they are much easier to configure as well. Another advantage of the IP based PBX system is that this system can support traditional telephone handsets and software based telephones as well. Another advantage is that the caller can make international calls very easily through the internet, thus saving a lot on costs on long distance charges.

Hopefully this article has been of some help to better understand how PBX systems work. So, if you are interested in setting up a PBX, Hybrex or any other business phone system, then please do contact Expert Telecommunications at http://www.expert-telecom.com.au.

  • Hi,

I appreciate your constant update on the telecom trends.

I represent PBX Plus (http://www.pbxplus.com) which is based on the award winning (Best of Show for SMB at IT Expo, LA 2009) platform – InVox (http://www.invox.com).

We would like to see you signup and review PBX Plus. I would be happy to add a FREE US or UK number with unlimited minutes to your account.

Your number would greet your callers with “Thanks for calling… Please say the name of the person or department you are trying to reach.” Caller can just say your name “…“and call will be forwarded to your mobile, landline or Skype account. It works with my Skype, offers free speech recognition, voicemail and voicemail transcription, eFAX (Fax In), Fax Out, Outbound FAX, Fax on Demand, unlimited extensions and sub-extensions etc.

The drag and drop designer (visio-like) can be used to configure PBX in just 15 mins. Wizard configures the PBX based on the answers to each question about your business.

In fact, show attendees at IT Expo walked out “This is the best I have seen till day for telephony era!”

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks.

    Williams
