Remote Surveillance – Equipment That You Need

As technology continues to advance, remote surveillance systems are becoming more popular and more accessible to the public. Not only can people monitor their homes for intruders, they can check up on the babysitter, or the kids, and they can do it anywhere they can find a computer. If you have decided that a remote camera system is the right thing for your home, you will need to decide on what type of setup you want and what type of equipment you will need.

Analog Closed Circuit Television System with Network DVR

One type of system you could install is an analog closed circuit television (CCTV) system. Start by installing analog cameras around your home in key positions. Then connect these by an analog coaxial cable to your DVR or digital video recorder. This is then connected by a local area connection (LAN) to a network switch which is then connected to your computer by the Internet. The great thing about this system is that you can monitor your home from any computer with Internet access. You can also operate the system from any computer and some setups even allow you to monitor both pre-recorded video and live feeds.

Network Video Cameras with Video Servers

Another remote surveillance system you could try is to use video servers. This system employs analog cameras connected by coaxial cables to video servers. These are connected by LAN to the network switch which is connected by the Internet to your PC. In this setup though video management software is required for your computer, but off-site recording is still possible.

Network Camera Systems

This system uses digital cameras that compress the video themselves. These are cameras that are then connected by LAN to the network switch and then the Internet carries the images to your computer screen. The benefits of this system include high resolution pictures to better see what’s going on in the video, more flexibility and the ability to adjust the camera angles and audio remotely.

The basic components for each system are fairly similar, but they all depend on where the video is being compressed, wither in the cameras themselves or through the DVR or video server. You should always determine what your essential surveillance needs are before you invest in a particular system. This will help you decide which setup will best serve your remote surveillance needs and how much equipment you will need to buy.
