The wireless age is here and has been for quite some time. I remember the 1st time I saw someone with a wireless cell phone, about 10 years ago. He was standing in line at the grocery store having an animated conversation. I, like many other people in the grocery store, though he was crazy – you know one of those people who talked to himself, worse than that, he seemed like someone who answered his self styled conversation as well. I was wrong, it was a bluetooth headset!
Welcome to the world of wireless!
Well wireless has evolved past the cell phone and into our homes. Initially, these high priced and technically sketchy items have lingered on the fringes of our technical universe. Now, stereos, computers TV’s even controlling the light all have gone and can go wireless.
The nice thing, like all technological innovations is, prices are dropping and reliability is rising. The high priced units of yesterday are less buggy and more affordable now. And like all things technical this trend will continue.
As a home electronics aficionado wire was annoying, but a necessary nuisance. To my wife’s dismay, wires littered our house; I carefully disguised and routed them in closets over doorways and even under the house. Wires were part of everything from speaker wires for the stereo to networking cables for the computer. If I had a nickel for every wire running in the house, yeah you know the rest of the story I would be a rich man.
But the wireless revolution has started and all types of devices are available. One unique application is a small camera that is placed near the license plate of a car, it is connected wirelessly to a little monitor by the drivers dashboard giving said driver a clear view of what is going on behind the car. The electronic mirror of video takes a safe enhancing step forward for the road warrior.
But the most unique and perhaps remarkable device was for a computer it is a bluetooth enabled keyboard, hold on this isn’t like any keyboard you can imagine. It works by projecting a picture of the keyboard on any flat surface and by pressing the projected keys you execute your tasks, all wirelessly.
The tactile feel is missing but the possibilities dwarf the imagination. Just think if you could project it big enough you could have a fun new game a cross between twister and scrabble all wireless with the computer taking care of the score,
Well, enough of this farfetched wireless talk, let’s accept ditching the wires and the chores associated with them from cleaning around the wires to connecting them correctly. the wireless world has much to offer.
As they said in that old TV show, Star Trek, “Live well and prosper” – I say live wireless and comfortable.
