How to Set Up a Wireless Network at Home

Setting up a wireless network is not a thing of mystery, just like anything else it involves a set of instructions on how to do it. Even if you are not too technical you don’t have to worry, my 13 year old son followed these steps on setting up a wireless network and was able to use the laptop in his room after 10 minutes. If he can do it so can you.

Step 1

Choose the right hardware or router. This is important, many routers don’t last too long and these are not cheap so make sure you are getting your money’s worth. Read performance reviews before you make that purchase.

Step 2

Take your equipment out of the box, check that everything in the product description is there. Almost all routers come with an installation wizard CD, run this and you can’t go wrong.

Step 3

If you router has no installation wizard CD follow these steps; 1. Check you have internet connection. 2. Turn off modem and remove the LAN cable connecting your modem to the computer. 3. Connect a LAN cable from the modem to the router, there will be slots that are labeled internet or LAN that’s where they should go. 4. Power up both the modem and the router.

Step 4

Check if you have live Internet connection. Open your web browser and make sure you can get online. If not, you may have to manually configure your Internet settings. Locate the manual. The setup information that you need to get started resides at the beginning of the manual. Find the default IP address for the unit as well as the administration username and password. Open your web browser and type in the IP address of the router, 90% chance it will be ’192.168.0.1′. Enter the user credentials, again 90% of the time the username is ‘admin’ with a password of ‘password’. Once you are logged in, change the password and write it down somewhere safe.

Step 5

At this point you should have had a pop-up stating that a new wireless network has been found. If this is the case, select “connect to the network” and enter your password and you are good to go!
