A Few Issues You May Encounter With a VoIP Phone and How to Resolve Them

VoIP technology has drastically improved since its emergency a few short years ago. VoIP now offers crisp calls clear sound and reliability, but problems can arise. Some VoIP issues can be resolved at your end, but some may lie in the transmission lines. By knowing the source of the problem, you can find the appropriate VoIP solution.

1. If you hear what sounds like static on the line or the speech has some jitter to it, it’s probably the result of packet loss or LAN (local area network) congestion. In some cases, your firewall could introduce errors. Normally this goes away quickly. If the problem continues however consider finding a different ISP (internet service provider) or using a different firewall. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, contact your VoIP provider, for assistance.

1. Gaps in speech may happen with a VoIP phone. They are commonly the result of VoIP hardware errors. If words are clipped or there are gaps, the best thing to do is to contact your VoIP provider.

2. Ticks or pops on the line can occur with a VoIP phone. This may happen due to a variety of reasons, including LAN congestion, computer issues, or electrical grounding issues. If the pops only occur on some occasions, you may want to contact an electrician to have your lines checked. For more frequent issues, check your computer’s task manager to see if it’s running unnecessary processes and shut some of them down.

3. The causes of line noise vary. In addition to the above three issues, you may experience humming, distortion, or hollowness in the voice. Humming is often caused by nearby electrical wires. Try moving wires away from the handset and base. Distortion may be caused by LAN congestion or be a handset issue. First try changing handset. A hollow voice may also be a handset issue, or it could be a problem with the line. To confirm the issue, try switching handsets before contacting your VoIP provider.

4. A dropped call is usually the result of excess packet loss. The best solution is to place the VoIP call again. If you can’t complete the call, confirm that your internet access is active and functioning properly.

Because of the rapid improvement in VoIP technology, these issues with a VoIP phone are very rare these days. Some people have used a VoIP phone for three years or more and have never had any of these issues especially those who use high speed or broadband internet.
