Cabling New Commercial Buildings – TIA Standard 568-B.2-10

The cabling infrastructure for a building is designed to last at least 10 years. The 10GBASE-T Ethernet standard is estimated to be deployed in large scale by 2013. The network cabling installed today by cabling companies in new commercial buildings will need to support at a minimum two generations of Ethernet.

In April of 2008 The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) development and intelligence for the information and communications technology (ICT) industries, announced that it has published TIA Standard 568-B.2-10: “Transmission Performance Specifications for 4-Pair 100 Ohm Augmented Category 6 Cabling”, a revision of commercial building standards which include Category 6A Cabling.

The TIA/EIA-568-B standards were first published in 2001. They supersede the TIA/EIA-568-A standards set, which are now obsolete. TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10 is a significant step forward in copper cabling. The standard documents how to run 10 Gbps Ethernet on up to 100 meters of twisted pair Category 6A cabling. The standard addresses the newer cable designs that are about 0.30 inches in diameter compared with 0.25 inches for high-end Category 6 and 0.2 inches for Category 5e.

According to TIA The cable itself is designed with larger conductors, tighter twists and more airspace in the core. This provides improved network performance for the next generation 10GBASE-T Ethernet standard via lower losses at high frequencies and better alien crosstalk isolation between cables.

To remain competitive cabling contractors will need to implement the Cat 6A or 10Gbps Ethernet. The cabling contractors must upgrade their certification in order to have the capability to test per the standard.

TIA-568-B.2-10 was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR42.7: Telecommunications Copper Cabling Systems Engineering Committee’s TR-42.7.
